Changes FL law to equate classroom and school libraries. Defines "sex" for PreK-20 code. Gives school boards full responsibility over all instructional and library materials. |
Strongly oppose House version, which eliminates categorical funding. Earmarking funding for instructional materials ensures our students have equal access to resources across the state. Eliminating categoricals would allow local boards to wipe out funding to support the school libraries. Both bills change the K-12 Education Code to allow full, immediate censorship in school libraries. Student self-selected materials should be separate from required instruction. School boards and principals without library science degrees or certification should not make final decisions for school libraries. |
SIGNED 5.17.23 HB 1069 passed with all Democrat amendments failed. Senate passed House version. |
||
Prohibits schools from knowingly engaging in specific activities relating to students' information; specifies duties of operators; provides circumstances, under which an operator may disclose students' covered information. |
Full support of student protections. Librarians have provided annual digital citizenship instruction since the passage of CIPA in 1993. We stand in support of parents having final say on posting their children's images and information online. |
Presented to Governor 5.16.23 Senate Bill passed. House passed senate version. |
||
Requires mental health professional to complete courses in tech and porn addiction by specific date. Requires warning labels affixed to certain digital devices. Requires age limits on apps and other materials online. Limits instructional time that can be delivered digitally. Outlaws the use of wireless devices in schools. |
Fully support child protections online and materials and limiting time of digital instruction. Strongly oppose redefining "harmful to minors" to negate the Miller Test as outlined in SC Miller v. California. Strongly oppose districts not allowing personal wireless devices. These are filtered through district networks. Not allowing them limits instruction when school devices fail. |
5.5.23 Died in Committee SB Now in Approp. HB Now in CC |
||
Requires information literacy instruction. |
Fully support. However, this bill will require a library media specialist for every school, which currently does not exist in statute. However, FL statute does require a library PROGRAM, but many public, charter, and private schools do not have programming either. |
5.5.23 Died in Committee Introduced 3/7 |
||
Prohibits the use of preferred pronouns. Prohibits teaching sexual orientation or gender identity until grade 9. DOE approves all materials related to sex education. |
Strongly oppose. This statute would deny students' and parents' rights and limit the quality and access to critical, accurate information before students become sexually active, diminishing their personal, mental, and spiritual health. |
